August “Gus” Mizera

TAHLEQUAH — August “Gus” Mizera, Cookson resident, died June 8, 2013 at his home. He was 90 years of age.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.

Gus Mizera was born Dec. 14, 1922, In Prague. He was the son of Frank and Veronica (Vassak) Mizera. He grew up in Prague and attended school there.

During World War II, Gus served in the U.S. Army with the combat engineers in Algeria, Corsica and Italy. He later served in the U.S. Air Force during Korea in England, Greenland and Vietnam, retiring as a staff sergeant in 1970.

He and his wife, Mary, moved to Cookson in 1971. For 18 years Gus was the water plant manager in Cookson.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Cookson; one son, Phil and wife Donna of Claremore; one daughter, Brenda Payne and husband Jack of Seminole; one sister Polly Nebel of Rochester, Wash.; four grandchildren, Brent Mizera, Sumer Mizera, Brad Payne and Stacy Miller; three great-grandchildren, Matt Mizera, Alex Payne and Onalee Payne and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters, Joe, Louis, Frank, Wesley and Jerry Mizera, Gussie Stottlemyre, and Lilly Leake.
