TAHLEQUAH — Memorial services for Lucy Shapley, 84, of Tahlequah, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the First United Methodist Church.

 Officiating will be Rev. James Graham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be to a local church or favorite charity.

Services are under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at tahlequahfuneral.com.

Lucy was born Mary Lucille Griffin, the daughter of Robert and Mary Ratliff Griffin, on Nov. 11, 1929, in Cookson, and raised in the Pettit area of Cherokee County.

Lucy departed this life on Friday, May 16, at her home in Tahlequah.

She was a 1947 graduate of Chilocco Indian School. Lucy then married Orville Shapley on June 19, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Tahlequah.

She had worked as a key punch operator. Together Lucy and Orville lived in several states from North Dakota, California, Arizona, and Utah before returning to Oklahoma in 1962.

They began their first grocery at the entrance to Sequoyah State Park, growing the Mr. O’s brand to a small chain of convenience stores throughout three states.

They retied in 1997 and went for a while to live in Nashville, Tenn., returning to Tahlequah in 2007.

Lucy enjoyed family outing, camping and fishing, and taking care of her family.

She has been preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Clem Griffin, Betty Step, and Geniva Sue Griffin.

Lucy is survived by her husband, Orville of the home; their daughter, Gloria Shapley of Tahlequah; grandson, William Thorne of Tahlequah; seven great-grandchildren, Brandon, Sara, Savannah, Maddie, and Nathan Thorne, Logan Ross, and Ayden Ludwig; brother, Dick Griffin and wife Pat of Fort Wayne, Ind.; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and loved ones.
