Dr. Jerry Douglas Harreld

TAHLEQUAH — Dr. Jerry Douglas Harreld was born July 7, 1931 in Galena, Kan., and passed away on Dec. 31, 2012, at his home in Tahlequah at the age of 81.

After graduation from Galena High School, Jerry entered the U.S. Navy and received a competitive appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan., and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a platoon sergeant in the 11th and 82nd Airborne Infantry Divisions.

Jerry graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University in 1959. He later earned his Master’s Degree and Education Specialist from Pittsburg State. He received a Doctorate in Counseling from the University of Tulsa in 1970.

He started his teaching career in mathematics at Shawnee Mission, Kan., public schools. He then became a senior high counselor and director of guidance for Pittsburg, Kan., public schools. Jerry was a tenured professor of guidance and counseling for 29 years at Northeastern State University and retired as Professor Emeritus.

Jerry was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), had taught Sunday school and had served as deacon and elder. He was past member of the Tahlequah Lions Club. Jerry was a lifetime member of the National Education Association. He was a national certified career and school counselor and an Oklahoma licensed professional counselor.

Jerry loved his family, God, country and his profession of helping people.

Jerry leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Emily Sue Harreld of the home and two children, Melanie Slagle and husband, Reed of Sugarland, Texas, and Douglas Harreld of Fort Smith, Ark.; and six grandchildren: Adam and Christian Slagle, Jennifer, Megan, Zachary and Emily Harreld.

The family will be holding a private service at a later date. Cremation is under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.
