George Willis Clinton was born on Feb. 28, 1941, in Barber Community, the son of Albert Willis and Thelma Lou Minnie (Parris) Clinton. He attended school at Baggley. George served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 until 1963.
He married the love of his life, Phyllis Luper, on Aug. 7, 1963, in Tahlequah. This union was blessed with four children and would have celebrated 50 years this year.
George worked in construction, carpentry, and auto repair. Whenever he wasn’t working, George enjoyed time spent hunting coon, deer, elk, and quail. He liked an afternoon spent fishing and was a sports enthusiast, especially NASCAR and OU “Sooner” football.
George had a big heart and was as honest and generous as the day was long. He genuinely loved people. Everyone was family to George. Every moment spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and family was special for George. He was as comfortable with a baby sleeping on his chest as he was watching his “Biggie” ride bulls. There was always room at his table or in his heart for one more child. He was everyone’s favorite “Poppy,” and a superhero to all the lives he touched over the years.
A Christian by faith, George was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at his home in Tahlequah with his loved ones close to his side. George was 72 years old. He will be greatly missed for the love and guidance he has given over a well lived lifetime.
George is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Larry Clinton; his grandmother, Bertha Holly; and all of his brothers and sisters, Edna Mae Walls, Thelma Tudy Hicks, Frankie Clinton, Jake Clinton, Clessie Albert Clinton, Mutt Lloyd Clinton, Jossie Lee Hemphill, Betty Jo Tennison, Donald Ray Clinton and Jeff Floyd Clinton.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Phyllis, of the home, and three children, Lori Clinton of Tahlequah, Denise Carter and husband Eric of Owasso, and one son, Gary “Bubba” Clinton and wife LouLou of Louisa, Va. His legacy will live on in his 14 grandchildren, Bonnie, Eddie, Misty, Steph, Amber, Terri, Allan, Samantha, Jake, Bubby, Schaelyn, Joseph, Chase, and Ashley; as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and more friends and family than you can count.
