Gomer Eli Smith was born on Feb. 3, 1935, in Stilwell, the son of Charley and Maggie (Sanders) Smith. After attending school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and received his honorable discharge after four years of faithful service. Upon returning to the Tahlequah area, he began his career as a automotive mechanic.
Whenever Gomer wasn’t working, he enjoyed every spare moment spent with his kids and his grandchildren. He adored the game of softball and taught this skill so it could pass from generation to generation. He really enjoyed a day at the lake, either fishing or sharing a picnic lunch.
He loved his family, every family get-together, and every holiday was spent in the company of his children and grandchildren nearby, and as many as he could gather under one roof.
Gomer’s health began to fail him and on Monday, Dec. 2, he passed from this life to his eternal home at his home in Tahlequah. Gomer was 79 years old. He will be greatly missed by the many friends and the family he has loved so very much.
Gomer is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Donna Gayle Smith; and one grandson, Jeremiah Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory include one son and one daughter, Dudley Smith of Ardmore, and Mary Jo Huffman and her husband Harold Cloud of Tahlequah. He leaves one brother and five sisters, Jimmy Smith of Oklahoma City, and Evelyn McCosar of California, Mary Jo Barnett and husband Bill of Shawnee, Christine Collins and husband Arlis of Tahlequah, Nellie Hudson of Stilwell, and Joyce Greybull of Muskogee.
Gomer’s legacy lives on in his six grandchildren, Brandi Teague and husband Mike of Tahlequah, Jenny Johnson and husband Charles of Tahlequah, Ryan Stephens of Tahlequah, Cheyenne Grendon and husband Collin of Del City, Dakota Smith of Tahlequah, and Lindsey Smith of Tulsa; seven great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and relatives.
