Lewis “Pa” Justus

PARK HILL — Lewis “Pa” Justus, 91, of Park Hill, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 26, in Tulsa. A graveside memorial service will be held in his honor on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. at Tahlequah City Cemetery, with Brother George Hubbard officiating.

Lewis, or Pa, as most his friends and family called him, came into this life on Aug. 27, 1922 in Tahlequah. He was the son of E.M. and Alta Lee (Williams) Justus. After being married to Betty Marie Candy for 43 years, she passed away, and Pa was lucky enough to meet a second true love in his life time, and married Maxine Terrell on Oct. 23, 1993 in Bentonville, Ark. They were able to enjoy 21 very happy years together.

Pa was a member of the Tahlequah Elks Lodge, and at one point filled the role of exalted ruler. He was a retired salesman for Tahlequah Lumber Company.

In his free time, he could be found tinkering around and building things out of wood, or cutting a rug and flirting with the ladies when the opportunity would arise. He enjoyed going to get breakfast at the Golden Corral, where he made sure everyone was made happy by walking around handing out candy.

Everyone who met Pa soon knew he had pockets full of candy and shared it with everyone, even the nurses at the hospital. Pa will be greatly missed by all his friends and loved ones, and those closest to him will always have the memory of him when they see his trade mark candies: butterscotch, Tootsie Rolls, or Hershey’s Kisses.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one daughter, Marilyn Martin; three brothers, Fred, Mutt, and Bull Justus; five sisters, Mary Ruth, Flo, Sue Ann, and Nancy; and four grandchildren, Anthony Wofford, Laura Martin, Justin Williams, and Michael Williams.

Those left to carry on his legacy include his wife, Maxine Justus of the home; two daughters, Susan Yocham and husband Phil of Coweta, and Teresa Wofford and husband Frank of Tahlequah; three stepsons, Steve Ballard and wife Denise, Dewey Ballard and wife Melody, Mike Ballard and wife Melanee, all of Park Hill; one sister Jean of Arlington, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and six great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of friends and other loved ones.
