William M. Tonkin, husband of Kitty Graddy Tonkin died Thursday, Dec. 26. He was the son of the late Thomas J. Tonkin, Jr. and Ann McClung Tonkin.
Tonkin graduated from Culver Military Academy, Culver, Ind. and from the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Tonkin was a professor of history at Northeastern State University from 1966 until his retirement in 1985. He was a University of Kentucky Fellow, having established an engineering scholarship in memory of his father, a long-time vice-president of the Central Kentucky Natural Gas Co.
In addition to his wife, surviving are two children of a previous marriage; two sons, Thomas J. Tonkin IV and his wife Laura of Tulsa, John W. Tonkin and his wife, Ellen of Norman; one daughter, Margaret Ann Page of Midlethian, Va.; one grandson, Edward N. Page of Midlethian. A brother, Thomas J. Tonkin III, preceded him in death.
