Fred Ferguson, 68, departed this life on Monday, Jan. 6. He was born on May 21, 1945, to Elmer and Johnnie Ferguson in Konawa.
Fred was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968. After an honorable discharge, Fred returned home and attained a degree in education. He spent many years coaching and teaching and later as a principal and superintendent. He served the past 13 years as superintendent of Shady Grove School.
Fred enjoyed fishing, junking and road trips with his wife, Debi, which they charted on a collection of treasured maps. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them participate in their many activities. He could often be heard singing snippets of songs and ditties around the house or found relaxing in his recliner, watching a football or basketball game and drinking a cold glass of RC Cola.
He is survived by his wife, Debi, of the home; two daughters, Michele Schanbacher and husband Rocky of Cherokee, Jenifer Smith and husband Nathan of Westville; three stepchildren, Jamie Owens and husband Scott of Tahlequah, Melissa Rubey, of Bentonville, Ark., and Phillip Wood and wife Billie of Ada; nine grandchildren, Justin, Landon and Katie Schanbacher, Piper and Emery Smith, Tiffany and Bailee Owens, and Sam and Gracie Shelley; two brothers and their spouses, Ronny and Esther Ferguson of Dumas, Texas, and Bill and Sue Ferguson of Prague; a sister, Mary Roberson, and husband Leroy of Weatherford; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Hart Funeral Home in Tahlequah on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 10 a.m.
