TAHLEQUAH — Hughie Truman Steely Jr., “H.T.” left this life peacefully on July 7, 2013, at his home in Tahlequah at the age of 84.

H.T. was born in New Hope on Oct. 14, 1928, to Leether (Chapman) Steely and Hughie Truman Steely Sr.

H.T. was a devoted husband and father. In 1948 he married Margaret L. Briley. From this union three children were born. He and Margaret were looking forward to celebrating their 65th anniversary on Oct. 15 of this year.

H.T. was a WWII veteran and very proud of his military service. He had a lifelong career as an education administrator serving as a Principal, Cherokee County Superintendent and Head Start Director.

He loved to fish, hunt, read, walk and garden. He was very proud of his yearly garden and enjoyed sharing his vegetables with family and friends. Many lives were touched by his kindness.

H.T. is preceded in death by his son, Ron Steely.

H.T. is survived by his wife, Margaret of the home; son, Alan Steely of Vian; and daughter, Diane Robinson and husband Joe of Muskogee; four grandchildren, Alan W. and Alex Steely, Joey and Brett Robinson; three great-grandchildren, Amelia, Darrien and Kadien; brother, Jack Steely and wife Joyce of Short; sister-in-law, Doris Steely, also of Short; as well as many other friends and loved ones.

The family will be holding graveside services at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at the Akins Cemetery in Akins. Final arrangements were placed under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at tahlequahfuneral.com.
