Bertha Faye Stierwalt was born Dec. 17, 1952, in Tahlequah, the daughter of Willie and Ida Marie (Tye) Ryder. Bertha attended school at Tahlequah High School and later attended Northeastern State University, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree and began her career as a medical technologist.
She was a devoted employee and worked at Tahlequah City Hospital for over 30 years, retiring as the assistant chief medical technologist. She loved the patients entrusted to her care and went the extra mile to do anything to make them feel better.
Whenever she wasn’t working, her family was her No. 1 priority. She adored her son and especially her grandchildren, Christian, Analise, and Kinsey; any time spent with them was a good day. She loved collecting angels and her home was adorned with angels throughout. She kept them as gentle reminders, nearby, as a source of inspiration and comfort.
There were few venues of crafting that Bertha didn’t find interest. She enjoyed needlework, beading, knitting – you name it, she had probably tried her hand at it. She was a devoted daughter to her parents and loved to spend time with them. Bertha was a Christian by faith and a member of the First Christian Church of Tahlequah, and enjoyed the chance to break bread with her church family.
Those who knew Bertha know she was the embodiment of courage. She fought cancer with vigor and was determined not to let it limit her daily life, and kept going in spite of her illness.
The Lord took this good and faithful servant home from her labors on Saturday, Nov. 30 in Tulsa, with her loved ones by her side. Bertha was 60 years old. She will be greatly missed by her family, her friends, and all the lives she touched over the years at Tahlequah City Hospital.
Bertha was preceded in death by her mother, Ida Marie Tye-Ryder in 2006, and her father, Willie Ryder in 2013.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son and his wife, Stephen Stierwalt and Lisa of Tulsa; and her pride and joy grandchildren, Christian, Analise, and Kinsey Stierwalt of Tulsa; her brother and wife, Bill and Mary Ryder; her nieces and their families, Alice Nysveen and her husband Cary, and their son Logan Nysveen of Tulsa, Amy Handley and husband J.D., and their children Magenta and Veronica Handley of Tulsa; as well as aunts, uncles, many cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
