Joe Edd VanBuskirk was born June 3, 1937, in Erick. He was raised by very special parents, J.V. and Olive VanBuskirk.
He grew up in Rocky Ford attending Rocky Ford Elementary School, and graduated from Oaks Mission High School. He served with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas; Topeka, Kansas; Japan; Austin, Texas; Spokane, Wash.; Paris, France; and Tucson, Ariz. He returned to Oklahoma City with an honorable discharge after serving eight years. Aug. 19, 1957, he married Juanita Irene Thompson. They were blessed with three children.
Joe worked at Flint Company and later as a carpenter for Tandy Homes. Before retiring he was employed with the Oklahoma Department of Tourism. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed gardening, traveling, fishing and woodworking. Joe passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Muskogee on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Shirley, Wanda and Patsy.
Joe is survived by his wife, Juanita of the home; son, Joseph VanBuskirk of Peggs; daughters, Vicki Beaver and husband Gilbert of Peggs, and Velna VanBuskirk of Peggs; brothers, Willard Osburn of Rocky Ford, and Kenneth Osburn and wife Beverly of Collinsville; sister, Clara Smith and husband Frank of Rocky Ford; grandchildren, Zachery VanBuskirk and wife Angela of Tahlequah; Brandon Beaver and wife Cari of Cabot, Ark., Tiffany Polak of Hutchinson, Kan., Stephanie Dean and husband Eric of Peggs, Reil VanBuskirk of Peggs, Jennie VanBuskirk of Pryor, and Brittney and Casey VanBuskirk of Rocky Ford; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Tyler, Jackson, Jayden and Lily VanBuskirk of Pryor, Baylee and Caylee Beaver of Cabot, Ark., Kaleb, Natalie and Austin Polak of Peggs; a very special friend of the family, Dena Sharp; as well as many other friends and loved ones.
Services will be held Friday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m., at the Iron Post Free Holiness Church in Locust Grove. Interment will follow in the Blue Springs Cemetery in Peggs under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.
