Cowboy cornerback looking for a suitor

Brodrick Brown may be a former All-American, but the ex-Cowboy cornerback has yet to find himself a job after his football career at Oklahoma State.

With many football teams looking more at his 5-foot, 8-inch 181-pound frame instead of what he accomplished on the field, Brown is biding his time now until he finds himself strapping on the pads again.

“It’s very disappointing. All that I’ve been through, battling injuries and being undersized, it’s real tough to deal with,” Brown said recently during a Stillwater High football team camp at Pioneer Stadium. “But I’ve got a great support group and they believe in. They still think I could have a shot of getting where I want to go. I won’t let them down, won’t let myself down and will just keep going for it.”

There was a long list of former Cowboys to sign as undrafted free agents following the NFL Draft, but Brown wasn’t one of the lucky ones.

Instead, Brown, who some ranking websites projected as a potential seventh-round pick, had to continue to prove himself.

The Houston native received an invite to the San Francisco 49ers’ mini camp in May. But nothing came of it. He also tried to take his talents north of the border, trying out for a team in the Canadian Football League. Again, nothing doing.

“It’s kind of like in a standstill since all the teams are done with training camps,” said Brown, who is finishing his final college class this summer. “You just continue to work out, continue to believe in myself and believe in what I can do and where I want to go in life. When it comes time or gets closer to the season, I still might get that shot.”

Fellow OSU defenders who signed free agent contracts, Alex Elkins (Detroit Lions), Nigel Nicholas (Tennessee Titans) and Ryan Robinson (Oakland Raiders), as well as former teammate Markelle Martin — who was drafted in the sixth round by the Titans in the 2012 draft — will now serve as motivation for Brown.

“I’ve talked with a couple guys and they’ve told me how it works and everything like that,” the ex-Cowboy cornerback said. “... I’m not going to let anything hold me back or keep me down. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think about how it could be if I was already on a team. But that’s part of life.”

For now, he’ll take any chance he can get to be close the sport he loves. While serving football players following the team camp last week, Brown couldn’t keep away from tossing the ball around and talking with some of the high school kids.

While he’s still keeping his options open when it comes to playing again on the gridiron, Brown said he could see himself one day in the coaching rankings and teach the young football players — but he’s hoping that’s far, far down the road.

“Once you love it, you always love it. It’s like it becomes a hobby for you to be around it,” Brown said. “I’m not thinking about the coaching route right now, eventually down the line I could eventually see myself coaching young kids and giving them ideas of how college is and what coaches are looking for out of future players.”
