Former Bishop Kelley standout traded to Reds

TULSA — The Colorado Rockies have traded Tulsa Drillers pitcher Parker Frazier to the Cincinnati Reds for major league veteran hurler Armando Galarraga.

Frazier is expected to report to a Reds minor league affiliate, but the team hasn’t been named.

Frazier, a Tulsa native who attended Bishop Kelley High School, has split time with the Drillers and the Triple A Colorado Springs Sky Sox in 2013. In 16 appearances with Tulsa this season, the right-hander was 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA. In his two seasons with the Drillers, Frazier had a combined 3.65 ERA in 43 career outings.

Galarraga is best known for his near perfect game while pitching for the Detroit Tigers in 2010. An umpire’s incorrect call at first base kept him from pitching Major League Baseball’s 21st perfect game.

OSU’s Farrell wins silver at European competition

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State’s Tom Farrell has claimed the silver medal in the 5,000 meters competition at the European Under-23 Track and Field Championships.

Farrell completed the race in 14:19.94 during the weekend competition in Tampere, Finland. The time was about half-a-second short of winning the race.

Farrell just missed out on the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. And OSU coach Dave Smith says Farrell’s strong performance in the European competition will be a huge boost for his confidence.

In the hammer throw, Cowboy Nick Miller took ninth place with a throw of 66.64 meters. The result matched his finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but he beat NCAA champion Tomas Kruzliak by more than two meters.

Oklahoma St.’s Barnett named to another watch list

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State senior defensive tackle Calvin Barnett has been named his fourth watch list of the preseason.

Barnett appeared on another watch list Monday as a candidate for the Rotary Lombardi Award.

Eligibility for the award is limited to down linemen, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards from the football, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. Candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-American honors, being named to their respective all-conference teams or receiving 2013 pre-season honors.

Barnett had previously been named to watch lists for the Nagurski Trophy, the Bednarik Award and the Outland Trophy. Barnett was a first-team All-Big 12 selection during his 2012 junior season.
