State briefs

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma State is No. 14 and Oklahoma comes in at No. 16 in the USA Today preseason coaches’ poll.

The Cowboys are followed by Texas at No. 15 in the poll released on Thursday. TCU, the only other Big 12 team in the poll, came in at No. 20.

Defending national champion Alabama was the No. 1 team in the coaches’ preseason poll. Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford and Georgia rounded out the top 5.

Half the top 10 is from the Southeastern Conference, which has won the last seven national championships. The SEC has a total of six teams in the top 25. The Big Ten and Pac-12 each had five teams in the poll, followed by the Big 12 with four and the ACC with two.

SWOSU’s Martin gets Phillies’ Minor League award

WEATHERFORD — Former Southwestern Oklahoma State University pitcher Shane Martin has been named the Philadelphia Phillies’ Minor League Pitcher of the Week.

Martin, a ninth-round selection of the Phillies in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, earned the honor for the week of July22-28. It’s the first Pitcher of the Week honor of his professional career.

In two starts, Martin was 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings pitched, allowing 10 hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters for the Williamsport CrossCutters.

Martin exhausted his eligibility in 2013 after one of the best seasons in Southwestern’s NCAA Division II history. He anchored the Bulldogs’ pitching staff, ending the year 11-2 with a 2.85 ERA. A Weatherford native, Martin was twice named the Great American Conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
