NSU’s Price ties for 1st at golf tournament

CATOOSA — The No. 22-ranked Northeastern State women’s golf team finished third in its home tournament, the 15th Annual NSU Women’s Golf Classic, on Tuesday.

The RiverHawks improved their team score by 17 strokes to end with a final round score of 305 and placed third with an overall score of 627.

Freshman Baylee Price shot the low round of the tournament with a final-round score of 1-under 69. She bogeyed the last two holes to finish at 146 and ended in a three-way tie for first place with Arkansas Tech’s Megan Jeffery and Ana-Laura Gomez of Southwestern Oklahoma State. Jeffery won the playoff with a birdie on the first playoff hole, but all three individuals were crowned as medalists.

Arkansas Tech won the tournament with an overall score of 609.

Northeastern State will play next week in Avondale, Ariz., at the Grand Canyon Invitational.

Peralta, Schmoker score twice in 7-2 triumph

The No. 9-ranked Northeastern State men’s soccer team posted a 7-2 victory over Oklahoma Christian University Tuesday evening

The nationally-ranked RiverHawks (3-0-1) were competing in their home opener.

The Eagles (2-1) scored first in the eighth minute, but NSU put away two markers before halftime to send the home side into the locker room with a 2-1 edge.

OCU equalized in the 50th minute, but RiverHawk goals in the 51st, 57th and 58th minutes would finally put away the pesky visitors from Oklahoma City.

Woodruff wins second straight honor

Northeastern State’s Jordan Woodruff was named the MIAA Women’s Soccer Goalie of the Week, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced on Tuesday.

The freshman from Long Island, N.Y., has now won both weekly accolades handed out this season.

Woodruff improved to 4-0 on her young career by shutting down both McMurry and East Central, while also earning her second-career shutout.

For the week, she registered a .909 saves percentage and a 0.47 goals against average. She made 10 saves and conceded just one goal in 192:44.

The RiverHawks are set to return to DeLoache Field for a 7 p.m. match Thursday against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

OSU’s Smart named preseason player of the year

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State sophomore Marcus Smart is the preseason National Player of the Year by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.

The yearbook praises Smart of his ability to make the players around him better players.

OSU will begin practicing for the 2013-2014 season on Sept. 28.
