Shinn at 3 p.m.: Most polls have Sooners outside the top 10 heading into next season

NORMAN — Oklahoma finished the 2012 season ranked No. 15 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today coaches poll.

The Sooners, who finished 10-3, concluded the season outside of the top 10 for the third time in the last four years. Their last top 10 finish came in 2010 at No. 6.

The other trend that continues for the Sooners is failing to meet preseason expectations. They’re not easy to surpass in the Sooners’ case. It has started the year ranked 10th or higher in the AP Top 25 the last 12 years. The only years OU finished higher than it started during that stretch were 2000 (started No. 19, finished No. 1) and 2010 (started No. 7, finished No. 6).

For the looks of early preseason polls to emerge following Monday’s national championship game, the Sooners will have an easier time finishing ahead of their preseason ranking at the end of the 2013 season. Here’s where several early Top 25s have OU heading into next season:

ESPN.com: No. 17

USA Today: No. 21

Yahoo!Sports: No. 12

National Football Post: No. 12

Orlando Sentinel: No. 6

NationalChamps.net: No. 15
