Former NSU athletic director lands new gig at Oakland University

Local and state briefs

ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland University has hired Jeffrey F. Konya as its new athletic director.

The school announced the move Monday. It takes effect Aug. 11. Konya is currently the athletic director at Cal State Bakersfield, where he has worked since 2010.

Robby Stewart had been Oakland’s interim athletic director since Feb. 1, when Tracy Huth left the position.

Betty Youngblood, Oakland’s interim president, says Konya is a veteran leader with a record of "progressively increased leadership responsibilities."

Konya says it’s his responsibility to create an environment for athletes to be successful academically, athletically and socially.

3 Sooners named to Bednarik Award watch list

NORMAN — Three Oklahoma Sooners have been named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award that’s presented to the player selected as the college football defensive player of the year.

The Maxwell Football Club announced the 76-man watch list on Monday. Semifinalists will be announced in November, while the winner will be named on Dec. 11.

OU linebackers Frank Shannon and Eric Striker and defensive end Charles Tapper were named to the list. Each of the three will be a junior in 2014.

The award is named for Chuck Bednarik — a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame. It has been presented each year since 1995.
