Oral Roberts pulls away from Houston Baptist

— TULSA — Bobby Word scored 20 points and fueled a second half run with five unanswered 3-pointers as Oral Roberts defeated Houston Baptist 88-55 in their conference opener Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles (7-7, 1-0 Southland) trailed much of the first half but took a 24-23 lead on a Korey Billbury free throw with 3:05 to go and built a 33-28 advantage that they took into the break. Midway through the second half, Oral Roberts put the game away with 20 unanswered points, 15 of them from the five straight 3-pointers by Word.

Shawn Glover contributed 16 points and Billbury had 15 for the Golden Eagles, who shot 48 percent from the field and hit 9 of 20 from beyond the arc.

Houston Baptist (3-10, 0-1) is playing its inaugural season in the Southland Conference.

Cody Joyce and Tyler Russell led the Huskies with 10 points apiece.



No. 25 Oklahoma women trounce Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas — Aaryn Ellenberg scored 17 points to lead No. 25 Oklahoma over Texas Tech 68-38 on Thursday.

Oklahoma (10-4, 1-0 Big 12) got 12 points from Nicole Griffin and 11 points from Morgan Hook. The Sooners shot 62 percent from the floor, including 5 of 7 from beyond the arc. They also went 11 of 13 from the free throw line.

Texas Tech (6-6, 0-1) was led by Amber Battle with 11 points and six rebounds. The Lady Raiders shot 23 percent and was just 5 of 31 (16 percent) on 3-pointers.

Oklahoma only led by eight at the break, but went on a 9-0 run at the start of the second — including a 3-pointer and layup by Ellenberg — to take control. A 14-0 run late in the game completed the blowout.
