Sooners blast Oral Roberts

NORMAN — The No. 16-ranked University of Oklahoma baseball team scored in every inning and five players recorded multi-hit efforts in a 15-8 victory over Oral Roberts Wednesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The Sooners (19-4) swept the midweek series over the Golden Eagles (5-15) and won their seventh straight game.

OU’s bats pounded out a season-high 15 runs on 14 hits, marking the 14th time in 2013 the Sooners have collected at least 10 hits and fourth game in a row.

“I thought we did a great job,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. “Scoring in every inning is pretty amazing. I think our guys have done a good job of making in-game adjustments. You want to be winning and playing well heading into Big 12 play, and every day, we’re getting a little bit better. Our guys are having fun and working hard at it.”

Junior infielder Matt Oberste continued his white-hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with a double and his team-leading seventh home run of the season to go along with four RBI and three runs scored. He has hit safely in 26 consecutive games dating back to the 2012 season, the second-longest such streak in program history. He is one game away from tying Marty Neff (1991) for the longest streak in OU annals. Oberste has reached base safely in 30 straight games dating back to the 2012 season. He is hitting .500 on the season through 23 games with 18 extra-base hits and 32 RBI and posted his 13th multi-hit game and eighth multi-RBI game of 2013.

Junior infielder Hector Lorenzana matched his career best, going 3-for-5 with a double to go along with a career-high three RBI. Senior infielder Jack Mayfield went 2-for-4 with his third home run of the season to go along with three RBI. Freshman outfielder Craig Aikin matched his career best with two hits and two runs scored. Senior outfielder/infielder Max White went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior southpaw Billy Waltrip struck out three in one frame of relief work and was credited with the pitching win, improving to 1-1 on the season. Freshman righty Ralph Garza, Jr. tossed the final four frames, limiting ORU to one run on three hits and a walk.

Oklahoma opens Big 12 play by hosting conference newcomer TCU in a three-game set at L. Dale Mitchell Park this weekend. First pitch of Friday’s series opener is now scheduled for 2 p.m.
