Robinson lands NCBWA regional honor

Local and state briefs

Cody Robinson was honored as the NCBWA Division II Central Region Hitter of the Week, the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association announced Wednesday.

The preseason All-American was 6-for-12 (.500) across four games this past week, and that included two home runs, two doubles, five runs batted in and three runs scored. He registered a 1.167 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage, while not committing an error in the field. He also stole home in the second game of a sweep at Harding.

One of his home runs came against Jason Hoppe of No. 2 Minnesota State, who was a Rawlings/ABCA First Team All-American pitcher a year ago.

This is the first weekly regional award of Robinson’s career, and he became the first player in NSU history to win the weekly hitter award. Former NSU great Trevor Walch is the only other player in school history to win a weekly regional award, as he was named the NCBWA Central Region Pitcher of the Week on April 3, 2013.

Northeastern State (2-2) is set to travel to St. Joseph, Mo., this weekend (Feb. 21-23) for a four-game MIAA-opening set against Missouri Western State.

No. 13 West Virginia blows out Oklahoma State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Bria Holmes scored 20 points and Christal Caldwell added 15 as twelfth-ranked West Virginia throttled No. 13 Oklahoma State 77-45, holding the Cowgirls to 25 percent shooting on Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers (23-3, 12-2 Big 12) raced out 14-0 and were never threatened, leading by 18 at halftime and adding an 8-0 run to start the second half on a Caldwell jumper.

Oklahoma State (20-5, 9-5) was led by Tiffany Bias, who scored 10 points on 4-for-13 shooting. As a team, the Cowgirls connected on just 16 of 62 shots and were an even colder 1 of 18 on 3-pointers for a season-low 45 points.

The Mountaineers, who handed Oklahoma State its first loss of the season 71-67 in Stillwater on Jan. 4, harried the Cowgirls into 17 turnovers.

Asya Bussie added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers with Taylor Palmer adding 10 points and four assists.

The Sooners' Corey Copping picked up the win while UAPB's Jim Ploeger took the loss.
