OU names Matt Luther assistant women's golf coach

State briefs

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head women's golf coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell has named Matt Luther as assistant coach.

The announcement was made Wednesday by OU. Luther comes to OU after serving the last two years as the head men's and women's golf coach at the University of St. Thomas, an NAIA school in Houston.

Luther was hired by St. Thomas in March 2011 to rebuild a golf program that had been dormant for 25 years. The men's and women's teams amassed a combined seven top-five finishes during his two seasons — plus two team titles, two individual titles, three Red River Conference Player-of-the-Week honors and one second-team All-America selection.

Drouin-Luttrell is beginning her fifth season at OU and has led the Sooners to top-10 national finishes each of the past two years.

OSU's Piliusina ranks eighth at World Univ. Games

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State's Natalja Piliusina has finished eighth in the 800-meter final at the 2013 World University Games.

After running a school-record 2:01.59 to qualify for the final on Monday, Piliusina ran a 2:04.62 to take eighth place in Tuesday's race in Kazan, Russia.

Piliusina was able to crack the final eight despite having only the seventh-best personal record in her semifinal heat entering the competition.

Piliusina says she was happy that she posted a personal best in the semifinal. But she says she had tired after Monday's race.

Piliusina can add her World University Games performances to what has been a stellar 2013 outdoor campaign for the OSU track and field star. She captured the NCAA Championship in the 1,500-meters and won her sixth Big 12 800-meter title.

Oklahoma's Aaryn Ellenberg leads USA over Brazil

NORMAN — Oklahoma's Aaryn Ellenberg has scored a game-high 19 points to lead Team USA (3-0) to a 105-75 victory over Brazil (1-2) to sweep through preliminary round play at the World University Games.

Ellenberg hit seven of 13 attempts, including 5-of-9 3-pointers, in just 19 minutes on the court during Wednesday's game in Kazan, Russia.

Ellenberg's total all came in the first half as the Americans routed their third straight opponent and moved on to Friday's quarterfinal rounds, where they will meet the loser of a matchup between Russia and Sweden.

Team USA and Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale says Ellenberg is a volume scorer who can make a lot of points in a very short amount of time. Coale says it was good for her teammates to see her performance.
