Cherokee Nation Marshals investigating incident involving K-9

TAHLEQUAH — An investigation is underway regarding an incident in which a Cherokee Nation Marshal Service K-9 bit a motorist during a routine traffic stop on Thursday. The traffic stop occurred Thursday evening at approximately 8 p.m. near Kenwood. The motorist, a 30 year old female, was bitten on the left cheek. A police report will be finalized early this week and forwarded to the Cherokee Nation Attorney General’s office for further review. The motorist was taken to Saint Francis Hospital for treatment.

“The number one goal of the Marshal Service is to protect our citizens and ensure their safety, and we are dedicated to that mission,” said Shannon Buhl, director of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service. “We want our citizens to know that this incident is being fully investigated and the appropriate course of action will be taken.”

“The Marshal Service alerted me immediately after this incident had occurred and has cooperated fully and completely with my office throughout the investigation.  I look forward to receiving their report,” said Cherokee Nation Attorney General Todd Hembree.

The K-9 involved in the incident remains out of service at this time.
