Man lands in jail after deputies show at fight

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man this week after responding to a fight.

Michael Don Lea, 38, of Welling, was booked for driving under the influence. Deputies said they were dispatched to State Highway 51 and Welling Road for a fight, and the suspect, Lea, had left in a car before they arrived. Deputies spotted Lea and after they made contact with him, arrested him for DUI. Lea refused to take the state’s test to determine his breath-alcohol content.

Deputies arrested Taylor K. Harris, 22, of Tahlequah, last weekend for assault and battery and public intoxication. Harris allegedly punched Kaleb McCarty in the face when the two began to wrestle around a bonfire and things “got out of hand,” a report said.

Heidi Jackson spoke to deputies Sunday to report a residential burglary. Jewelry items were taken, along with coins, a 19-inch flat-screen TV, three game cameras, an XBox 360, and tools.

Patrick Kirk said the tags were stolen off of his two vehicles on Bryant Road recently.

Kirt Smith reported the fraudulent use of a debit card that had been stolen from his residence. Smith told deputies the man who took the card returned it after spending all of the money on the account.

Joycelyn Marcquis told deputies an industrial chain and padlock were stolen from her gate last week.

Deputies responded Sunday when a 15-year-old boy took a bottle of soda pop from Dollar General north of Tahlequah. The boy told deputies he didn’t have money to buy the beverage.

Robert Townsend spoke to deputies after two game cameras were stolen last month. Townsend said he found a card with a woman’s name on it on the property where the theft occurred.

Deputies filed a death investigation report this week on Gomer Eli Smith, 79, of Tahlequah. The manner of death is listed as natural.
