TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies took a report last week after an elderly woman said she was scammed into sending several hundred dollars to a man.

The woman said she received several phone calls from a man, who said she had won $5,000 from Publisher’s Clearing House. The man told her to receive the money, she would have to get four $500 MoneyPak prepaid cards and give them to him.

The woman told deputies she purchased one card last week, called the man and gave him the numbers off of the card. The man told her to get three more of equal value and he would meet her at a bank in Muskogee. The man took the $500, but never met the woman at the bank.

In other matters, deputies took a report from James Huntley last week after an intruder broke into a storage unit and took several items.

Eric McCully filed a report after a burglar kicked in his back door and took seven firearms last week.

Frankey Copeland filed a report with deputies after his wallet was taken at a convenience store. Copeland said he laid the wallet down on the counter and someone took it. Deputies said they reviewed surveillance footage from the store and are unable to see whether those who were near Copeland at the time of his visit took the wallet.
