‘Nervous’ man nailed for drugs

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies arrested an 18-year-old Tahlequah man last week after a traffic stop near Garden Walk Apartments.

Deputy Bryan Qualls said he was traveling through the apartment complex when he saw a Ford Mustang heading toward him, with a man sitting on the trunk of the car. Qualls stopped the vehicle, driven by Larry David Welch.

Welch appeared to be “nervous and fidgeting,” Qualls reported. Welch gave deputies consent to search him and his vehicle, and Qualls allegedly found a bag with three pills in Welch’s pockets. Welch did not have a prescription for the pills, Qualls said.

Deputies booked Welch into jail for possession of a controlled dangerous substance without a prescription. He received a $4,000 bond and was released from jail.
