Cherokee County pair accused of taking tools from hospitalized man

Staff reports

TAHLEQUAH — Two Cherokee County men are accused of taking several tools from a third man’s property while the victim was hospitalized.

Joshua Butz, 30, and Terry William Taylor, 50, are each charged with second-degree burglary.

Prosecutors allege the two worked together to break into a building and steal numerous items from Frank Strong last year.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Investigator Gary Cacy began looking into the case last September. Cacy said he interviewed Taylor on the phone, and Taylor admitted he and Butz had been to Strong’s property.

Taylor claimed he had gone to look at a truck, which he had been told Strong wanted to sell. He denied taking anything other than an oxygen tank, which he told Cacy he had loaned Strong.

Cacy said he asked Taylor to provide a statement, and to have Butz provide his statement as well, but the suspects never followed through. Strong provided several pages listing the items missing from his property.

If convicted, Butz and Taylor could face two to seven years in prison.
