Cherokee County sheriff’s officials are following up on an investigation after an alleged victim of rape confessed she lied about what happened.

Undersheriff Jason Chennault’s report says a 15-year-old girl met with officials from Help-In-Crisis Monday morning and said she was forced by 19-year-old Jorge Landaverde to have sex. The girl initially claimed Landaverde locked his bedroom door and held her down.

Landaverde was arrested for rape and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center Monday evening. During an interview with Chennault, Landaverde repeatedly denied he forced himself upon the 15-year-old, and said their relations were consensual.

According to Chennault, the alleged victim later called to get information about a protective order. During that conversation, Chennault told the girl that Landaverde had been interviewed and denied forcing himself on her. The girl then allegedly told Chennault she lied about being raped.

Chennault said he was told by the girl that she had consensual sex with Landaverde last week. She later claimed she was raped because she didn’t want to upset her mother, who had apparently found out about what happened.

Chennault’s report has been submitted to the District Attorney’s Office, and prosecutors will now decide whether to file charges against Landaverde for having sex with an underage girl.
