Man arrested after taking vehicle

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Hulbert man Monday for allegedly taking a vehicle and failing to return it.

Daniel Wayne Mauldin, 23, was booked for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and second-degree burglary.

Jeffrey Wilson told deputies Mauldin took his car Sunday without permission and did not bring it back. Wilson later located the car and deputies went to the scene.

While deputies were looking at the car, Mauldin allegedly approached with the keys, saying he was bringing them back. Deputies said Mauldin admitted he had the car, but shrugged when they asked him if he knew it was illegal.

Wilson discovered several items had been taken from the vehicle while Mauldin had it, including a drill and a laptop.

In other matters, Travis Briggs spoke to deputies this week after his 2007 Jeep was taken from beneath Welling Bridge. Briggs said the Jeep became stuck there June 8, and when he returned two days later, it was gone.

Christina Clinton this week reported being assaulted by a woman. According to the report, Clinton was assaulted in April, but filed the report now because of a custody battle.

Steve Propst reported the theft of medication Monday.

Nickie Farner reported an identity theft this month.

Mike Martin said he was brush-hogging his property this week when he found someone had built a fence on the property.

Jaclyn Lee-Bias spoke with deputies this week when a man grabbed her and pushed her in front of seven children. Tim Felts filed a similar report, saying the same suspect hit him in the side of the face.
