Man arrested in wake of assault

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Tuesday after he allegedly assaulted a woman.

Michael Gene Settlemyre, 37, of Tahlequah, was booked into jail for domestic assault and battery. Deputies said Settlemyre is accused of choking a woman until she nearly passed out. He later allegedly grabbed a loaded gun and began to wave it around, but was talked into emptying the gun and handing it over.

In other matters, Lisa Adair filed a report this week about a man stealing some of her belongings from a friend’s house. Adair said she had left some of her property at her friend’s house while she was in jail recently.

Fausten Willhite told deputies some tenants in a rental trailer moved out without notice and apparently took an air conditioning unit.

Thomas Brown told deputies his garage was burglarized recently, and a firearm and several boxes of ammunition were stolen.
