A Welling woman was booked into jail Saturday after she allegedly tried to strangle a cat and then threatened witnesses.
Miriam Sue Hathcoat, 36, was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center for cruelty to animals.
Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Pruitt said witnesses reported Hathcoat was trying to strangle her cat and was making threats. Those who witnessed the incident said the woman was acting strange when she grabbed the cat and began to choke it.
Hathcoat allegedly claimed there were “too many” cats, and admitted to deputies she had attempted to kill one. Pruitt said he asked the woman why she strangled the animal, “and she said, ‘How else would I kill [it, by] drowning it?’”
Pruitt said the cat survived because witnessed stopped the incident. He said the feline appeared to be scared, but otherwise was OK when Hathcoat was arrested.
Booking records show Hathcoat bonded out of jail Monday.
