Children say man offered candy, asked questions

TAHLEQUAH — Children at the Garden Walk Apartments told deputies this week that a man approached them, offered them candy, and then asked whether two girls were “for sale.”

Sheriff’s deputies said a resident at the apartment complex claimed five children were in the neighborhood Tuesday when a man in his 50s or 60s drove by in a red car.

The man spotted the children, stopped, and offered them candy. He reportedly told the children he “wasn’t going to do anything with them,” and that he just wanted to “be nice and give them some candy,” deputies reported.

The children told deputies the man then asked whether two of the girls in the group were “for sale.” The children then ran off, and an adult contacted deputies.

According to the children, the man’s red, four-door car had a scratch that ran down one side of the vehicle. The driver was described as white, standing approximately 6 feet tall, with gray hair and a slender build.

He reportedly mentioned visiting a friend at the apartment complex, though managers were unable to identify tenants matching the name the suspect reportedly provided the children.

Authorities say suspicious activity should be reported to police immediately.
