Possible elder abuse under investigation

TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee County sheriff’s investigators are looking into a possible case of elder abuse.

Sheriff’s Capt. Bob Sanders learned from family members Wednesday that the victim has died.

Sanders said he is now investigating whether the man might have been taken advantage of before the situation came to light.

“There was information that [the victim] had received some kind of settlement recently, something like $15,000, and most of it is gone out of his bank account,” Sanders said.

According to a report filed by Deputy Raymond Hendricks, authorities were called to a Tahlequah hospital last week when the victim was treated for multiple wounds. Nurses told Hendricks they had found wounds on the man’s back side containing a severe infection.

Deputies later spoke to a couple of men who claimed they had regularly checked up on the victim, but nurses told authorities it was clear the man had not been properly cared for.

Deputies said they found blood on the victim’s headboard, and an indentation on the bed that looked as if he had been in one spot for a lengthy amount of time.
