TAHLEQUAH — Two people were jailed Wednesday night on accusations they participated in an early-morning armed robbery of the Caney Ridge Best Stop on State Highway 100.

Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault said the armed robbery occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

At about 4 p.m. Wednesday, Chennault issued an alert asking for information on the possible suspects; about two hours later, a man and woman were arrested.

Investigators believe 23-year-old James Kelley committed the robbery, while his girlfriend, 32-year-old Melanie Davis, drove the vehicle. Both were booked into jail Wednesday evening on potential charges of armed robbery.

Surveillance footage from the store showed an unidentified man wearing a hooded sweatshirt, gloves and a white face mask enter the store after being dropped off in a vehicle.

He then approached the cash register and pulled a dark-colored semi-automatic handgun from his pocket, Chennault said.

The man demanded money from the cashier, who complied and gave the suspect cash. The cashier then was then forced to get on the floor behind the cash register as the suspect ran away.

Chennault said the suspect left in a southwest direction and eventually out of sight from the surveillance cameras.
