TAHLEQUAH — A Welling man remained in jail at the Cherokee County Detention Center Wednesday on a $3,000 bond after authorities found him half-naked and drunk in a community cemetery.

James Lester Brinkley, 60, is held on potential charges of indecent exposure and public intoxication.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Pruitt responded to Barber Cemetery last weekend when witnesses claimed saw Brinkley naked, sitting on a headstone and committing a lewd act. Witnesses told Pruitt they tried to run Brinkley away from the cemetery four times, but he continued to walk toward them, still naked.

Pruitt found Brinkley sitting near the entrance of the cemetery, clothed only in a shirt and boots. Brinkley allegedly smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech.

Brinkley allegedly confessed he had been drinking whiskey all night, and said he didn’t remember what happened.

Court records show Brinkley was arrested and charged with public intoxication in 2011, but prosecutors later dismissed those charges.
