TAHLEQUAH — Prosecutors have formally charged a Welling man who was arrested for exposing himself to others while he was drunk inside an area cemetery this month.

James Lester Brinkley, 60, is charged with a felony count of indecent exposure, and public intoxication.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Pruitt arrested Brinkley at the Barber Cemetery, near State Highway 100.

Witnesses said Brinkley was naked, sitting on a headstone, and was committing a lewd act to himself. The witnesses told Pruitt they attempted to run Brinkley away from the cemetery multiple times, but he refused to leave and would walk back toward them while still in the nude.

Pruitt said he found Brinkley wearing only a shirt and boots and sitting near the cemetery’s entrance. Brinkley smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and appeared to be intoxicated, Pruitt said. Brinkley allegedly confessed he had been drinking whiskey all night, and claimed he didn’t remember what had happened.

Court records show Brinkley is free on a $3,000 bond.
