Hickman picks up silver in sprint event

Conrad, Garcia lead boys to 5th place showing

Allison Hickman thought she had herself a title.

Tahlequah's junior sprinter exploded out off the starting block in the 100-meter dash and won the first of five heats with a finishing time of 13.06 seconds.

Hickman swore that she was going to end up with a first-place medal. Then, Union's Esther Udoumoh spoiled all of that, logging a time of 12.95 in the second heat to win her second straight Reasors Track Classic crown.

"It was kind of disappointing because I thought I had it won," said Hickman, whose eight points for second place accounted for nearly half of Tahlequah's 18.5 points in ninth place at the annual event at Tahlequah High School.

Hickman wasn't too downtrodden, though. After all, she continues to climb the 100-meter dash hierarchy in Class 5A — a year after not even qualifying for the event at the state meet.

"She's finally rounding into a 100 runner and believing in herself," Tahlequah coach Elzy Miller said. "She's a very competitive kid and works really hard for us, and she cares about what she's doing so she's only going to get better and better."

Hickman's vast improvement in the shortest track event all stems from being able to get out of the block in a flash.

"I worked on my block work a lot," said Hickman, who was fifth at the 5A regional with a time of 13.44 in 2013. "I just got better at that, because that's what gets you there."

As for the remaining 10.5 points that the Tahlequah girls racked up, six came from Morgan Thompson in the 100-meter hurdles. Thompson finished at 17.76, which trailed only Bartlesville's Elle Denyer (16.43) and Broken Arrow's Michelle Sheppard (16.91).

Gracie Medellin (12:32.98) also finished fourth in the 3,200-meter run.

Tahlequah's final point of the day came from Erin Littlechief, who had a jump of 4 feet, 4 inches to finish sixth in the high jump.

Brandon Conrad picked up a gold medal, and Eric Garcia placed second in the discus to lead the Tahlequah boys.

Conrad — who finished second to Broken Arrow’s Damian Howard in the high jumpe at the Broken Arrow meet last week — beat Howard back on his home turf of Tahlequah High School. Conrad, Howard and Union’s Luke McAllister all recorded leaps of 6 feet, but Conrad accomplished the feat in fewer jumps, resulting in Conrad’s second Tahlequah track meet crown.

As for Garcia, he was able to defend his home turf this season with a second-place showing in the discus. Garcia let loose a throw of 150 feet, 1 inch and finished three inches off the pace set by Jenks’ Derek Robinson — who accomplished his best throw on his final attempt of the day.

Garcia also finished fifth in the shotput at 46 feet, 5 inches. Garcia was sixth in the event in 2013.

Here are the results from the track meet:
