— The Tahlequah girls basketball team defeated Coweta 46-29 Saturday night at Tahlequah Multipurpose Activities Center.

Tahlequah was led by Casey Beaston’s double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Randee O’Donnell filled the stat sheet with 15 rebounds, five points, five assists, and four steals.

“I told Randee at the half that she was doing a great job on the boards, and she went right back out and kept up the effort,” Tahlequah coach Chad Walker said. “I was also real proud with how Casey played tonight.”

The host Lady Tigers held the visiting Lady Tigers to just 21 percent shooting (10 of 48). Coweta also made just 3 of 20 from downtown (15 percent) and 6 of 12 from the free-throw line (50 percent).

Tahlequah shot 31 percent from the field (14 of 45), 16 percent from 3-point range (3 of 19) and 68 percent from the line (15 of22).

Coweta led the turnover battle (16-18), but Tahlequah led in points off turnovers (18-9), points in the paint (16-10) and bench points (14-5).

Neither team could find any discernible offense in a helter-skelter first quarter that netted just four points total.

“It was a little ugly to start off with,” said Walker, whose team was coming off a nine-point win over Collinsville on Friday night. “I figured we would have a bit of a letdown after last night’s game, but I thought the girls did a good job of battling through that.”

The home team caught fire in the second quarter and exploded for 20 points. Tahlequah conceded just six and took a 22-11 advantage into the locker room.

“We put some pressure on them and got some turnovers and easy baskets,” Walker said. “Our high-low game finally got active in the second and third quarters, and that’s hard to stop.”

Tahlequah pushed the advantage to 33-15 after three quarters and cruised to the 17-point win.

Kaitlyn Norton led Coweta with 12 points.

Tahlequah came out on fire early and held a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The home side kept a solid margin and found itself on top 21-15 at the 4:30 mark of the second.

Norris and Gunter made back-to-back layups for Coweta to spark an 11-3 run to end the half. The visitors took a 26-24 lead into intermission.

Tahlequah was unable to find the magic of the first half, as Coweta used a 21-9 third quarter to pull ahead and eventually take the 23-point triumph. Coweta outscored Tahlequah 39-18 in the second half.
