HULBERT — Anthony Howard and Justin Owens ran wild on Friday night, and Quapaw was powerless to stop the Hulbert duo.
Howard rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns, and Owens added 103 and a score in Hulbert' 19-6 victory over the Wildcats at Rider Field in District 2A-8 play.
As a team, Hulbert (1-7, 1-4 District 2A-8) logged 319 yards on the ground to pick up its first victory of the year.
"We finally got everything together for the most part," Hulbert's Bryson McGowan said. "Eight weeks late, but we will take it. [Now we're] gonna try to win out and squeeze in a playoff spot."
Neither team scored in the first half, but Hulbert didn't waste much time finding the end zone in the third quarter.
Only two minutes and 11 seconds into the second half, Owens scored on a 31-yard touchdown run, and the Riders went on top 6-0.
Howard followed a little more than three minutes later on a 45-yard touchdown run to give Hulbert a 12-0 advantage.
Quapaw's first score came on the first play of the fourth quarter. Running back Cole Hurley scampered 57 yards for a touchdown, and the Wildcats cut Hulbert's lead to 12-6.
That is all Quapaw (2-6, 2-3) would get, though.
Capping off the game for Hulbert was Howard's second touchdown run. With 4:25 left, he ran 13 yards for the final score of the night.
On defense, Hulbert limited Quapaw to 98 yards of total offense. Hurley had 79 of those yards on 13 carries.
Hulbert's final home game of the season will occur Friday night when the Riders host Kansas. Quapaw will be at Salina in Week 9.
