Salina extends Hulbert’s losing skid

— HULBERT — Another rainy Friday couldn’t wash away the past in Hulbert, as the Riders fell to Salina 24-12.

Hulbert’s first drive started with a defensive facemask penalty, giving the Riders a first down. Senior quarterback Chris Vance followed the penalty with a 20-yard pass. A short time later, Vance lost a fumble, giving Salina their first offensive opportunity of the game. Salina took advantage and marched 70 yards to score on a 2-yard run.

Hulbert’s second drive started much like the first had ended. Offensive penalties backed them up to their own end zone when Vance ran the ball twice to put them in scoring position. A short time later, the Riders punched it in for six points. A bad snap on the point-after attempt kept the score at 6-6.

“We played hard. We just made too many mistakes,” said Hulbert head coach Mitchell Crittenden. “We are going to have to come in and clean up those mistake.”

A short kickoff and late-hit penalty started the next Salina drive at Hulbert’s 43-yard line. Shortly after they were in the end zone with six more points. Hulbert blocked the PAT.

The second quarter began with Salina leading Hulbert 12-6. Neither team used their kickers much as they went for it on most fourth downs. Salina scored their next touchdown on a fourth-down play, leading Hulbert 18-6, the same score at intermission.

“Well, you have to make a decision to go for it on fourth down or try for a PAT after a touchdown. We missed the one field goal we tried,” said Crittenden.

The third quarter was scoreless.

In the fourth period, Salina faced another fourth down with 5 minutes to go in the game. Deciding to go for it, Salina scored a touchdown to make the score 24-6.

Hulbert’s Vance has battled a high ankle sprain all season.  His battle continued through the game, finally being helped off the field in the fourth quarter. He was replaced by junior Brandon Thompson. With four minutes to go, Thompson connected with senior receiver Spenser Frye for a touchdown.

“We have to see how big our heart is, clean up those mistakes and next we go to Quapaw. And they are kind of like us, they are looking for answers, too,” Crittenden said. “It will be whoever makes the least mistakes.”

The Hulbert Riders will play at Quapaw next week.
