Wright signs with NEO

A huge weight was lifted off Whitney Wright’s shoulders on Wednesday. She put the pen to the paper and the stress of deciding on a college was finalized.

“College seems to be a stressful decision for seniors athletes — seniors, in general, really,” she said. “I was stressed about getting recruited.”

She put all of that behind when she signed her national letter of intent with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Tahlequah’s third baseman/catcher will join the Lady Norse after picking up All-State honors for her efforts during the Lady Tigers’ 2013 season.

Wright capped off her fastpitch prep career with a .447 batting average during her senior campaign. Wright logged 59 hits — 21 for extra-base hits — drove in 38 runs, stole 11 bases and tallied a .958 fielding percentage.

“She worked hard to get where she is at,” Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud said of Wright, who transferred from Keys High School and took over at third base before moving behind the plate in 2013.

“It is a pretty amazing feeling to know that all of the hours and hard work I put into it paid off,” Wright said.

With Wright as a key cog in Tahlequah’s lineup, the Lady Tigers advanced to the Class 5A semifinals at the 2013 state tournament. Now Wright will be focused on helping NEO win at the collegiate level.

“I know I made the right decision by choosing NEO’s offer,” Wright said. “I can’t wait to play at the next level.”
