SALLISAW — Chase Campbell picked up an important win by fall at 170 pounds to lead Class 5A No. 10 Tahlequah to a 41-36 non-district dual victory on Tuesday night.
Tahlequah’s win over the Black Diamonds snapped a three-dual losing streak.
Wrighter Weavel (126 pounds), Zech VanFleet (132), Paul Sargent (138), Mitch Sellers (145), Hestin Lamons (152), Reese Davis (160) and Joseph Tucker (285) all won for Tahlequah.
“We picked up a much-needed win,” Tahlequah coach James Rappe said. “We needed a win to get our minds right.”
Reigning state champions Cale Wilson (182) and Jadon Davenport (195) both picked up wins for Sallisaw, which was coming off a tournament championship at home at the Paul Post Classic on Saturday.
Tahlequah will be at Grove on Thursday night before going to the Pryor tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Indians win; Cougars fall
At The Place Where They Play on Tuesday, Sequoyah’s wrestlers beat Stilwell 36-18 in a non-district dual. Both clubs will enter into the Maverick Conference Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
In Poteau, the Keys wrestlers dropped a 48-15 dual to the Pirates. Seth Fritts (160) and Bo Smith (120) picked up wins for Keys, which also received a forfeit at 152. Both Keys and Poteau will be in the Maverick Conference Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Hulbert teams split on the road
WARNER — Parker Taylor scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Hulbert blew out Warner, 53-30, on Tuesday night. The Riders (10-6) led 29-16 at haltime and were never challenged from that point on.
Leading Hulbert in the scoring department was Mason Fielden with 19 points.
In the girls game, Tiffany Thompson's team-high 12 points wasn't enough to get Hulbert past Warner. The Lady Riders lost 51-26 on the road.
As a team, Hulbert (10-6) shot only 17 percent (eight-of-45) from the field.
The Lady Riders were up 16-14 at halftime but were outscored 16-6 in the third quarter and 21-4 in the final period.
Hulbert will return home to take on Gore on Friday night.
Hulbert to host hoops event
Hulbert’s home basketball games against Gore on Friday night will be a special night at Rider Fieldhouse. The games will benefit the Coaches vs. Cancer Foundation.
There will be a drawing for a La-A-Boy reclining chair at halftime of the boys game. All donations made during the game will be sent to the American Cancer Society.
