AFTERNOON UPDATE: OSU running back arrested

TULSA — Oklahoma State running back Devon Thomas was jailed Friday on felony complaints of armed robbery and shooting with intent to kill as investigators determined whether he fired a gun in a heist earlier this week, narrowly missing the head of his alleged victim.

Police in Broken Arrow, just outside Tulsa, Oklahoma, said Thomas and three others — Eduard Smith and De’Carrio Taylor and a 17-year-old juvenile — were suspects in Tuesday’s robbery. Cpl. Leon Calhoun said the four suspects knew the alleged victim was known to possess and distribute various drugs, so they lured him to a meeting.

“The suspects knew this, and they set up the victim and robbed him,” Calhoun said.

The victim stated in the police report that Thomas was armed with a handgun and robbed him at gunpoint. They took the victim’s shoes, money, clothing and marijuana, the report said.

The victim then told police the suspects told him to leave because they were about to “bust a cap,” the report said.

As the victim was leaving, one of the suspects fired at least one round into the victim’s vehicle, which entered the rear windshield, nicked the driver’s headrest and narrowly missed the man’s head.

“If it doesn’t hit that headrest, this could have been very serious,” Calhoun said.

When police arrested Thomas on Wednesday, he denied he brandished a weapon or shooting during the incident. Thomas was being held on $125,000 bond. There was no information in the booking records on whether he had an attorney.

A spokeswoman for the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office said it was too soon to comment on the case because the investigation is ongoing. A school spokesman declined to comment, saying the school was still gathering details about the incident.

Thomas, 18, is a freshman who enrolled early for the spring semester.

An Oklahoma State spokesman declined to comment, saying the school is still gathering details about the incident. Thomas is a freshman from Broken Arrow who enrolled early for the spring semester. As a sophomore in high school, Thomas set Broken Arrow’s rushing record with 1,840 yards.
