Sequoyah to host 2 playoff sites on Thursday

Fans of playoff action in high school sports are in luck on Thursday. And they won't have to venture far from one site to another to watch it all.

Sequoyah will host both a Class 3A softball regional tournament and a 4A regional volleyball tournament today. The volleyball tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with Sequoyah taking on Hulbert, and the softball tournament will commence at 10 a.m. with Class 3A No. 1 Sequoyah taking on Cherokee County rival Keys.

The volleyball tournament will be placed at Sequoyah's gymnasium, The Place Where They Play. Eight teams will be vying for one spot in the 4A state tournament.

Sequoyah, No. 4 in 4A, is the only ranked team in the field. Other teams include Inola, Salina, Wagoner, Okay, Chouteau and Westville.

"We are excited to be hosting the regional tournament," Sequoyah coach Jay Herrin said. "And we are ready to play."

Sequoyah enters sporting a 25-4 record.

Just across the parking lot, Sequoyah's softball team will try to outlast a four-team field that also features 3A No. 14 Kansas (18-10) and No. 15 Verdigris (19-9).

Kansas and Verdigris will play at noon with a consolation game to follow at 2 p.m. The winners of both first-round games will square off at 4 p.m. at Sequoyah's softball diamond.

The softball regional will continue into Friday, while the volleyball regional will crown a winner on Thursday.

Volleyball regional

Match 1: Sequoyah vs. Hulbert, 9 a.m.

Match 2: Inola vs. Salina, 10 a.m.

Match 3: Wagoner vs. Okay, 11 a.m.

Match 4: Chouteau vs. Westville, noon.

Match 5: Match 1 and 2 winners, 1:30 p.m.

Match 6: Match 3 and 4 winners, 3 p.m.

Match 7: Championship, 4:30 p.m.

* Times are approximate. Each match will begin 20 minutes after the preceding one ends.

Softball regional

Thursday

Game 1: Sequoyah vs. Keys, 10 a.m.

Game 2: Verdigris vs. Kansas, noon.

Game 3: Game 1 and 2 losers, 2 p.m.

Game 4: Game 1 and 2 winners, 4 p.m.

Friday

Game 5: Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 loser, 10 a.m.

Game 6: Game 4 winner vs. Game 5 winner, noon.

Game 7: If necessary, 2 p.m.

    Justin had to battle to win the Indians starting tailback. The coaching staff did not know who was going to be the Indians starting running back coming into fall practice.
