Goodrich drafted 29th by Tulsa Shock

Former Sequoyah standout Angel Goodrich was drafted in the third round and 29th overall by the Tulsa Shock on Monday night during the WNBA draft.

Goodrich, once projected to go with one of the first six picks in the draft, slipped down the draft board and went to the Shock with the franchise’s second pick of the night.

“It was neat to see my name pop up,” Goodrich said. “There was a lot of waiting and some anxiety, but as soon as (my name) came up, my heart started pounding.”

Tulsa also selected Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins with the third overall pick.

The best part for Goodrich: getting to play professional basketball in her home state.

“It’s awesome that I will be so close to home,” said Goodrich, Kansas’ 5-foot-4 point guard. “This is such a blessing, because it’s so close. It’s right there. There will be a lot of people supporting me and cheering me on. This is really a dream come true.”

For the second straight season, Goodrich — only the sixth Kansas player ever drafted — led Kansas to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. Goodrich averaged 14.1 points and 7.2 assists per game.

Goodrich — the first Kansas player drafted since Danielle McCray was taken with the seventh pick in the 2010 draft — leaves Lawrence, Kan., as the Jayhawks’ all-time leader in assists with 771. She also recorded 1,262 points during her collegiate career.

Fellow Big 12 Conference member, Oklahoma’s Toni Young, was drafted on Monday. The OSU forward went seventh overall to the New York Liberty. Oklahoma guard Whitney Hand was taken 32nd by the San Antonio Stars.
