Tahlequah golfers finish 3rd

— SHAWNEE — Jake Johnson and Blake Berry both carded 80s to lead Tahlequah to a third-place finish at a regional tournament preview in Shawnee on Monday.

The Tigers finished with a 327. Shawnee was first with a 316, and Bishop Kelley was second with a 319.

Clinton’s Garrison Mendoza won the individual title with a 74.

For Tahlequah, Hunter Pennington (82), Brent Spradlin (85), and Brandt Emerson (86) rounded out the rest of the scores for the Tigers.

Tahlequah’s next tournament will be the regional tournament at Shawnee Country Club on Monday.



Bunch wins 3A golf tourney

Sequoyah’s Rylan Bunch shot a 78 and won a Class 3A boys qualifying tournament at Cherokee Trails Golf Course on Monday. Bunch beat Eufaula’s Luke Vancleave by five strokes to win the title.

Eufaula won the team title with a 347. Stigler (354), Inola (371), Sequoyah (376), Berryhill (388), Keys (395) rounded out the top six and each qualified for the regional tournament next week at Scissortail Golf Club in Verdigris.

Keys’ low score was turned in by Shea Heble, who had an 87.



THS shut out by Zebras

CLAREMORE — Class 5A No. 2 Claremore blanked Tahlequah 14-0 in a District 5A-3 game on Monday. With the loss, Tahlequah falls to 11-16 overall and 5-7 in district play. Claremore, who has already cinched the 5A-3 title, will be at Tahlequah today at 4:30.



SHS girls to take on Hugo

The Sequoyah slowpitch softball team found its regional assignment on Monday, and the Lady Indians will travel to Valliant on Thursday and take on Hugo in the first round. The other teams in the regional include Valliant and Muldrow.

Sequoyah and Hugo will play at 2:15 p.m., with other games in the regional occurring at 1 p.m. (Valliant vs. Muldrow), 3:30 (winner’s bracket), 4:45 (loser’s bracket) and 6 (state-qualify game).

The teams that go 2-0 or 2-1 will reach the state tournament next week in Oklahoma City.



SHS beats Sallisaw Central

SALLISAW — Sequoyah unloaded on offense and rolled to a 16-8 win over Sallisaw Central on Monday.

Zach Parish picked up the win on the mound for the Indians.

On offense for the Indians, Kyle Helsley went 4 for 5 with a home run and two runs batted in. Karter Woodruff drove in six runs on two home runs, and Ryan Helsley was 4 for 4 with two singles, two doubles and three RBI. Quinton Johnston and Billy Sunday each contributed two hits apiece for the Indians (11-8), who will open postseason play on Thursday at 1 p.m. against Westville in district tournament action.
