Panthers outlast Centennial in 2OT for first-ever hoops crown

From Staff reports

— OKLAHOMA CITY — Austin Guinn scored 30 points against Centennial on Saturday afternoon. But one of those points trumped the rest.

Guinn's free throw with 1:54 left in double overtime — the only point scored in the final overtime period — led 3A No. 1 Okemah to its first-ever championship in boys basketball.

The title is only the third ever in school history at Okemah.

"It means a lot," Okemah coach Cale Simon said.

No. 2 Centennial (26-3), after taking a timeout with 22 seconds left, fell short of winning its third title in four years when Malcolm Mitchell Jr. missed while charging hard at the basket. Okemah's Ben Custar grabbed the rebound and threw the ball the length of the court as the Panthers broke out into a jubilant celebration.

In regulation and both overtime periods, Centennial held for the final shot and came up empty on all three tries.

Guinn was Okemah's only scorer in double figures. Guinn's 3-pointer with 27 seconds left in the first overtime forced the 10th tie of the game and prolonged the game to another overtime period.

Okemah fell short in last year's title game, losing to Millwood in three overtimes.

John Wingfield, who had 25 points against Sequoyah on Friday, was limited to seven points against Centennial in the finals.

Mitchell led Centennial with 14 points. Corneilus McKiver added 13 points for the Bison, who finished the game without making one of its nine 3-point attempts.
