Tahlequah tennis comes up empty at state

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tahlequah’s boys tennis team returned home Saturday without accruing any points at the state tennis tournament.

Connor Nelson (No. 1 singles) and Hunter Manes and Lars Gris (No. 1 doubles) were all eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The tournament didn’t start off well for the Tigers, when they were handed three losses by default in the first round. Tahlequah was late arriving to the tournament, thus enduring three losses by forfeit.

“We had a tough start to our state tournament Friday morning,” said Tahlequah coach Mike Leafgreen, who identified troubles with the team’s van as the reason for showing up late on Friday morning. “But the guys bounced back and showed heart and determination in fighting back from that.”

Tahlequah’s only other state-tournament competitor was Leon Beck at No. 2 singles. He was ousted on the first day, with a loss to Bixby in the consolation first round.
