THS soccer sweeps at Grove

Local briefs

GROVE — Saul Medina tallied two goals, one in each half, as Tahlequah’s boys soccer team knocked off Grove 2-1 on Friday night.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in District 5A-3. Grove is 3-6 and 1-3.

The Tahlequah girls picked up a victory after beating Grove on penalty kicks after regulation and two overtime remained scoreless. For Tahlequah in the penalty-kick session, Brittany Scott, Hunter Elam and Mackenzie Smith all scored goals, while Tahlequah goalkeeper Samantha Chaffin saved two shots.

The win was Tahlequah’s first in 5A-3 play. The Lady Tigers are now 5-6 overall and 1-3 in league play. Grove is 1-5 and 0-4.

Tahlequah will return home and take on Tulsa Memorial on Tuesday.

Indians win tourney title

COMMERCE — Ryan Helsley tossed a complete-game two-hitter in leading Sequoyah to an 8-0 victory over Kansas in the Mickey Mantle Classic finals on Saturday. Helsley recorded five strikeouts, and on offense Helsley drove in two runs.

Also for the Indians (8-10), Elijah Tucker and Ty West each had runs batted in. Quinton Johnston went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in for Sequoyah, which will play at Oktaha on Monday.

On Friday, Sequoyah found it will host Westville in district-tournament play. Keys will be at Stigler and Hulbert will be at Warner. Dates for each district tournament have yet to be determined.
