Sequoyah’s softball team labored through the Broken Arrow tournament earlier on this season. The Lady Indians left Tulsa County with two wins, three losses and a .500 record at 3-3.
Since that time, Sequoyah has been virtually unbeatable.
The Lady Indians have won 12 of their last 13 games and have catapulted themselves up to No. 1 in the Class 3A poll on OSSAArankings.com.
Over the Labor Day weekend, Sequoyah enjoyed a fruitful trip to Colorado. The Lady Indians coasted to five victories against six teams from Colorado.
On the opening day of the tournament, Sequoyah blasted Frederick, 8-1, before getting past Erie, 9-7. Day two witnessed the Lady Indians beating both Broomfield (6-2) and Pueblo East (14-3), with Hayleigh Galvan hitting two home runs and Jaycie Harvey blasting a grand slam against Pueblo East.
The final day of the Tournament of Champions saw Sequoyah post a 14-3 victory over Silver Creek. The Lady Indians’ lone blemish was a 5-4 setback against Wheat Ridge.
Still, not a bad way to return to Oklahoma with more regular-season play on tap.
“Especially when you factor in that every team there played in their respective state tournament last year,” said Marcus Crittenden, Sequoyah’s athletic director.
Sequoyah coach Jeff Turtle was unavailable for comment.
Sequoyah ventured to the Rocky Mountain State as the top team in Class 3A, and they returned that way, too.
On Monday, the 3A rankings were updated with Sequoyah still atop the 3A poll. The Lady Indians racked up 28 first-place votes and picked up 639 points, edging out Washington, which landed at No. 2 with three first-place votes and 600 points. Sulphur, Davis and Marlow rounded out the top five.
Up next for Sequoyah is a game at Stilwell on Tuesday. The Lady Indians will continue on the road Thursday in Vian against both Stigler and Vian.
Also over the weekend, Tahlequah swept East Central in a pair of District 5A-3 games. The Lady Tigers won both games by a combined score of 41-0. Tahlequah will continue 5A-3 play today at Collinsville.
