Lady Tigers get past Claremore

Special Writer

— The Tahlequah volleyball team had a match against the Claremore Lady Zebras on Tuesday night. The Lady Tigers came through with the victory, winning the first and second sets, 25-8 and 25-20, respectively, before dropping the third set 25-22. But Tahlequah came back to win the fourth and last set of the match, 25-17.

“They (Claremore) weren’t going to lay down,” Tahlequah coach Don Ogden said. “It was a great conference win for us”.

The Lady Tigers started with dominance in the match, taking a 10-0 lead over Claremore in the first set.

The Lady Tigers struggled in the second set as they fell behind by as many as nine points at one point. However, they fought back to take back the lead after they went on to score 14 points in a row to claim a 19-18 edge. The Lady Tigers would never look back, stealing the second set from the Lady Zebras.

Claremore came back from their tough loss in the second set to take the third set decisively. Tahlequah battled back the whole set, and the lead went back and forth between the teams until Claremore took hold of the lead at 17. From there, the Lady Zebras held off Tahlequah.

Tahlequah responded in the forth set, as the match stood at a 14-14 tie, when Alli George slammed a kill down against the floor to give Tahlequah the lead. George had 9 kills in the game, and she was in the right spot at key moments as she killed the game-winner while ending Claremore’s hopes of a comeback.

Tahlequah’s Gillian Tinnin led the team with 13 kills. Kalie Champlain had 15 assists for Tahlequah and Katie Schneider added 18 assists.

“We had a great game out of our two setters,” Ogden said.

The Tahlequah volleyball team, ranked 12th in Class 5A, advanced to 4-1 on the year. The Lady Tigers will be back in action Thursday against Regent Prep.
